A 21-ton Model Designed for Mounting Upon Pneumatic Tyres.

THE new 2i-ton C.W.S. chassis, the production of which was indicated in our Tables of Specifications published in the 1927 Outlook Number, has now been put into manufacture, and the first of the type is being shown at an exhibition of the products and methods of manufacture of the Co-operative Wholesale Society held at Woolwich until Saturday next. There is one variation, however, from the particulars given in our Tables, in that pneumatic tyres are being fitted to the chassis instead of cushion tyres.

As is well-known, the C.W.S. chassis made in the former Pell Bros. factory are only allowed to be sold to retail co-operative societies, agricultural societies, farmers' associations and public bodies, and the current models include the 2-tonner in two wheelbases, 10 ft. 8 ins. and 11 ft. 4 ins., the 20-passenger vehicle, the 2i-tortner and the 21.-tonner, the 30-48 h.p. engine (100 mm. in the bore and 140 mm. in the stroke) being employed for the three last-named. This engine has a Bosch magneto and a Zenith carburetter, and drives through a Ferodo-lined cone clutch, a four-speed gearbox and an overhead worm gear. The engine and gearbox are mounted on a sub-frame, which is suspended in the main frame at three points so that alignment is assured between these two major units under all road conditions, and the fullest accessibility is given. A one-piece pot-type rear axle is employed, the shafts carrying no weight, and the top cover, carrying the worm, wormwheel and differential gear, being easily removable without the need for disturbing axle or wheels, and the axle shafts being capable of removal without detaching the wheels or jacking up of the chassis. The steel disc detachable wheels are shed with Dunlop pneumatic tyres, 32 ins. by 6 ins., with twins to the rear wheels. The rear wheels' run on hardened and ground bearings fitted with floating bushes of phosphor bronze. The road springs are semi-elliptic in 'shape and of ample length, whilst the brakes are fabric lined, compensated and protected • from the incursion of grease. The rear-brake shoes are fitted with patent oiRess bushes, where the pins fit. These prevent seizing up of the bearings in case of neglect in lubrication. The chassis throughout is fitted with nipples for use in the Tecaleinit high-pressure greasing system. Rubber buffns are fitted to the front axle to take any unusual road shocks. The wheelbase of the chassis is 12 ft., the track 5 ft. 2 ins, and the space from the dash to the end of the frame

14 ft. 6 ins. The price of the chassis with a five-lamp dynamo lighting set, and including a spare wheel and tyre and all necessary equipment, is 1560.

All types of bodywork are fitted to the C.W.S. chassis, and although the new model is mainly intended for the transport of fragile and delicate goods, it is no doubt also suitable for motor coach work. a branch of the activities of the co-operative societies to which considerable attention, is paid by the managements. We understand •that the Society supplies either chassis or complete vehicle, as may be desired.

The chassis is designed to withstand a reasonable overload, and throughout its design and manufacture it has been accurately measured and tested to ensure perfect interchangeability,, every part being numbered in order to ensure accuracy and rapidity in replacements.
