Master Patch,

When describing our experiences with the new repair outfit entitled the Master Patch we omitted to give the name and address of the makers, Gerrard and Co., 89, Great Portland Street, W.

The firm, moreover, request us to state that they will, with pleasure, forward substantial trial sample outfits to bon-fide inquirers. Letters of inquiry should be addressed as above.

For Regrinding Commutators.

The difficulty with the lowtension magneto commutator, which obtained from the •earliest days in connection with the old coil and accumulator ignition, and which still holds on the same fitting as applied to the Ford engine, ia that the softer, fibre portions of the commutator wear more quickly than the brass inserts. As a result, after a time the commutator brush tends to jump each time it strikes the brass portion, and irregular working frequently results. The remedy generallyinvolves a new complete commutator ; attempts at replacing the wearing parts have been made from time to time, but they have not invariably been successful. Alternatively, the commutator may be removed and reground. This is undoubtedly the best procedure if a permanent cure, but not a replacement, be desired. Rejax, Ltd., of 37 and 38, Broad Street, Golden Square, London, W., has secured the sole agency throughout England and Wales for a handy machine for this purpw e. Our illustration ahows it is designed for attachment to a strong bench or the running board of a car or van. A special' chuokiiis provided, which so grips the commutator that the emery wheel is lined truly with the fibre and metal portions which are to be ground. A flat retaining ,pring presses upon the tip of the commutator and holds it in place. The machine, which, by the way, we understand, is of British make, may be operated by hand or by power. If by hand, the hand is turned in clockwise direction, and the milled feed screw in an anti-clockwise direction ; this has the effect of keepi,ng the stone in contact with the conamutator whilst the grinding is taking place. A belt pulley is provided for powerdriving purposes. The price is 59s. 6d.

The Whalley Air Valve for Fords.

The drawback to a standardized product, turned out by the thousand, all to one pattern,. is that it does not, cannot, by force of the circumstances of its conception and manufacture, be at its best under all conditions. The Ford, for example, is marvellous value for money. This is a fact which cannot be gainsaid. It has been found advisable, however, to attempt to improve in various directions upon the all-round average results obtained from it.

At the moment the most important consideration in respect of mcrtor-vehicle running, is that of fuel economy, and in this regard it may truly be stated that there are few carburetters which cannot be improved upon.; the Holley, which is usually fitted to the Ford, is no exception. Generally, the first direction in which modification is attempted is by fitting an extra-air inlet valve, either automatic or hand-controlled. Of such thexe are many. The latest of them to which our attention has been directed is the Whalley, for which Brown Bros„ Ltd.' has secured the agency, and which we illustrate on th;s page. Its construction and work• ing will be almost apparent from the drawing. It consists of a thick hollow flange, open at the end, to whtch is fitted a disc valve, operated by Bowden wire from the dash or steering column. It can readily be fitted by the driver, and costs, complete, only 30s.

We are advised that Imperial Motor Industries. Ltd., have in stock a fairly comprehensive line of accessories. Many of these, as .is well known, are otherwise difficult of attainment4at tho moment, and users will be well advised to write to the company at 11, Denmark Street. Charing Cross Road, W.C., asking them for a copy of the list of these. goods, which is now issued.
