A GREEK DRIVER was charged with violating tax rules after border officials seized seven million cigarettes hidden in a truck full of grapes entering Dover.
On 24 August, UK Border Agency (UKBA) officers uncovered 7.1 million cigarettes under pallets of grapes when they searched a lorry that had arrived by ferry .2 from France at Dover's Eastern Docks.
The illegal imports are worth about aim; Driver Efthymios Gaianopoious was charged with duty evasion.
A spokeswoman for HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) at Dover stressed cigarette and tobacco smuggling is a serious crime: "This type of activity harms honest businesses and costs the UK billions."
After appearing at Dover Magistrates' Court on 26 August,
Galanopolous was remanded in custody. He was due to return to court on 1 September.
