iDrelations recently when Le Shuttle celebrated its
one millionth lorry through the tunnel. In true diplomatic style, the honour was shared between distribution specialist Cavewood, travelling from the UK to France, and French services group Beauvais International, making the journey the other way. Le Shuttle Freight was launched in 1994 and at its peak was carrying 2,000 vehicles a day. When the service was relaunched in June this year after the fire, it was averaging 1,200 vehicles a day. Obviously it will take time to build up business lost to ferry companies. On a lighter note, here are some fascinating facts: carried in those one million lorries were 12 million tonnes of freight ranging from helicopters to fresh flowers. If those one million lorries were parked end to end, they would stretch from London to the middle of Australia. That's what I call gridlock.
