WITH trade at its present low ebb, a loss of only 160 competitors in the CM Lorry Driver of the Year Competition, compared with last year, is almost a positive achievement. , But this year's 2,223 entries are estimated to represent only 0.0005 per cent of the possible field, which is disheartening for John Wells, the inspired national secretary, and the hundreds of enthusiastic volunteer workers.
But the willing organisers of one of this year's 33 regional contests will at least have the consolation of knowing that a five-man panel has unanimously voted their centre the best and winner of the Sam Gunnell trophy. Its identity will be revealed at the final at Cranfield on September 12.
Class champions at Cranfield are this year to receive more limelight and I would not be surprised to see them parading the paddock with rosettes, perhaps inscribed "Best in class," as proud as any pampered show jumper.
