An easy method of locating cracks in metal surfaces is provided by the Richmond Eddy current flaw detector introduced by Burmah-Castrol. This portable battery/mains instrument is a probe which is passed over the surface of the metal being checked and when it crosses the line of a crack or surface flaw the defect is indicated on a panelmounted voltmeter indicator lamp. Standard probes are available for different types of work and cracks can be detected according to the marketing company underneath oxide or paint films.

In full working trim complete with batteries. etc. the instrument weighs 13Ib and the case measures 12 Sin. by 9.5in. by 8. 5in.
