GOODYEAR HAS revealed its revolutionary self-inflating truck tyre technology concept.
The firm’s Air Maintenance Technology (AMT) will allow tyres to maintain constant, optimum pressure without the use of external pumps, electronics or driver intervention. Goodyear claimed this should improve fuel economy and extend the tread of AMT-equipped tyres. For every 7.25 psi (0.5 bar) a truck tyre is underinflated, there is a subsequent 1% loss in km/litre, it says. This means that a vehicle covering 150,000km a year and paying £1.11 per litre of fuel will pay an extra £580 a year in fuel for each 7.25 psi loss.
Chief technical officer JeanClaude Kihn said: “The AMT application for CV tyres will enhance the performance of the tyre and provide cost savings.” The AMT tyre might still be at concept stage, but Goodyear is already poised to launch the market’s first AA-labelled tyre shortly under new EU tyre labelling rules.
