Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

WHATEVER YOUR VIEW on the Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC training), the fact remains it will become mandatory for all LGV drivers to obtain the relevant certifications as of September 2014.

The UK may be some way off the deadline for compliance, but the DSA estimates that although somewhere in the region of 850,000 professional LGV drivers will need to complete the training by 2014, less than 10% of these drivers have currently completed their 35 hours.

Here at L&S Waste Management, 30 of our drivers have recently received their certificates having gone through the training process (pictured above), which has taken the best part of 12 months. Our CPC training was conducted as part of the Level 2 Driving Goods Vehicle Apprenticeship Framework, and covered a variety of subjects including basic numeracy and literacy, knowledge of industry standards, employment rights and responsibilities.

However, it’s worth considering that 35 hours, isn’t simply an intensive week’s course, but is intended to be completed in a number of stages, and outside of working hours, so at least six months should be allowed. Therefore it really ought to be something that employers should start thinking about sooner rather than later.

I say employers, but of course it is the responsibility of the individual driver to arrange, undertake and fund the training. But as this can cost anywhere up to £700 per driver, companies might want to consider looking at ways to support their staff, and there are various funding streams available to aid the process.

Professional training produces smarter, safer and more economical drivers so there is a clear benefit to businesses investing the time and effort in their drivers and helping them to gain these qualifications. Mick Balch
