• Transport manager of St Albans Sand and Gravel, Steve Richards, beat 28 other finalists to take the 22,500 first prize in the 1986 Transport Manager of the Year awards.
The competition was sponsored this year by Overdrive, Motor Transport magazine and Mercedes-Benz and the top prizewinners will be flown out for a tour of Mercedes-Benz's truck plant in Stuttgart. Runner up in the competition was Brian Hailing, a partner of HGV Training Services and special awards were presented to Mike Billingham of West Sussex County Council for his essay on transport in the environment. Les Beaumont of Whitbread Take Home for his report on fleet maintenance and Richard Hudson of Wincanton Transport for his report on fleet management.
