Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

With reference to the road test on the Renault 290 (CM, August 23), I would point out that all Eminox exhaust systems are not chrome plated but are manufactured from BS 304 Austenitic stainless steel which contains 18% chrome and 9% nickel. I would also contest the statement that exhaust gas is best directed to the ground. The exhaust gas, without any doubt, is best directed up and away. This stops dust being blown up, stops air pollution at breathing level and, if the correct tailpipes are tailored to your trailer, it will not make the curtains dirty.

There are numerous advantages for vertical stacks, and I do not know of one reason for otherwise.

Last but not least, the article, although mentioning what an improved fuel economy and performance this vehicle achieved, did not point out that this was entirely due to the low back pressure in the exhaust system and the lower depression in the intake system.
