a £165 million tunnel that will carry the A55 Chester-Bangor road under the River Conway Estuary near Llandudno, North Wales.
The 1.1km tunnel should be completed by January 1991. It is the largest single trunk road scheme ever awarded in the UK and it goes to a joint venture company set up by contractors Costain and Tarmac.
The A55 coast road carries traffic between Holyhead and the North West of England. In addition to the tunnel, the scheme will involve building 13 bridges, including a viaduct.
