increased by 3.4% to 415 million tonnes in 1984, compared with the previous year, according to an EEC report on the inland waterways. All member states except France reported an increase; 42.8% of the total is attributable to West Germany.
The total traffic in tonnes according to mode in 1983 shows 84.7% transported by road, 9.6% by rail and 5.7% by waterway. When the figures are given in tonne-kilometres the respective figures are
63.9%, 22.5% and 13.5%. Both sets of figures exclude the amounts of traffic carried by road in Italy and Luxembourg as these were not available. Eurostat 7C, available in the UK through HMSO.
