• Renault Truck Industries' iew UK flagship — the 247kW :331hp) R340 Turboliner trac:ive unit — will be making its 3ritish debut at this month's Birmingham Motor Show.
The R340 will only be availible as a 3.3m wheelbase, x2 artic, with either a stainiard or high-roof cab which re?laces the previous high-cab version of the lower-powered R310. The R310, however, will continue to be offered in Britain with a standard-height cab.
Power for the R340 Turboliner is provided by the G-version of Renault's 12-litre EVIIDR 06 35 40 air-to-air charge-cooled engine. This not only produces 10% more power than the existing 224kW (301hp) MIDR unit used in the R310, but also at a lower engine speed of 1,90Orpm.
Maximum torque on the R430 has been increased by 19% to 1,520Nm (1,121lbft) — again at the lower engine speed of 1,200rpm.
The G-engine also has the larger-capacity air cleaner normally used on R390 Turboleader models, a Garrett T51 turbocharger in place of the KKK unit and a new Bosch fuel-injection pump. Five-hole injectors replace the four-hole injectors used in the 224kW (301hp) engine.
Turboliner models will have the same Renault B18, 18speed range-change/splitter gearbox as the R310, but with a new 4.82:1 rear axle ratio as standard. Three other ratios — 4.55, 5.22 and 5.85 — are also available.
For the UK, the R340 is plated for 38-tonne GCW operation, although it has a design weight of 50.5 tonnes GCW. Two new options — an air-suspended drive axle and anti-lock braking — will become available on the R340 and these may also be offered at a later date on the R310 according to RTI.
RTI expects to release prices for the new R340 Turboliner at the Motor Show. The R340 has already been available in France since May, and makes its European Show debut at Paris next week. CM has road tested the R340 around our Scottish test route and will be publishing the results in our October 25 issue.
