ALMOST a third of all roac transport operators say the plan to cut their worldorces according to contract drivinE agency Overdrive.

In a national survey of the in dustry, the company, which i! part of Manpower, says that 3' per cent of employers plar cutbacks, and only five per cen have plans to ,increase labou forces.

This contrasts sharply witi last year, when the pre-Christ mas build-up had 22 per cent o operators planning to take or extra staff, and only eight pe cent planning cuts.

The figures mark a continua tion of the present decline — tht previous quarter to the end o last month saw 15 per cent o employers planning cuts.

A Road Haulage Associatior spokesman said this week tha he was "not surprised" by Oil figures which broadly conforn to its own members' exper iences.

And the message wa rammed home in Glasgow oi Wednesday when RHA nationa chairman Ken Ropers spoke o insolvency having become ". hurricane whistling around ou ears."

He said: "Frankly, I see nr light on the road ahead for a least six months."

Mr Rogers appealed for mod eration in the present wag. round, saying: "An excessiv. wage settlement will lead not ti a rise in drivers' prosperity, bu to a further twist in the spiral c liquidations."
