Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

"ALCOHOL without water is virtually non-existent," says Perkins. This was certainly not my impression after spending a Saturday night in Glasgow. Ap pearances are, however, deceptive, and the inevitable presence of even a small amount of CO, in alcohol fuel — ethanol from sugar cane or methanol from coal or wood — prevents its mixing with diesel fuel.

Nevertheless, Mike Hoffman, chairman of Perkins, says that research into ways of using alcohol containing water is one of the brightest hopes of perfecting alternatives to fossil fuels. The company is working on the use of ethanol and methanol both in the UK and Brazil, as well as studying vegetable oils.

All I ask is that Perkins keeps its hands off Plymouth Brewery's real ale.
