ONDON TRANSPORT's much-heralded XRM bus project is to get he chop, if the Greater London Council agrees. So said LT manag19 director (buses) Dr David Quarmby speaking to delegates at he Association of Metropolitan Authorities Conference on Transon in London last week, reports NOEL MILLIER.

Dr Quarmby stated that a reiew of the xRrvi project had oncluded that instead efforts hould be concentrated, toether with Leyland and MCW, n weight saving and improving le electrical system of the therwise "excellent" Titan and letro bus.

The cost of LT developing the ;RM from scratch would be ubstantial, said Dr Quarmby, nd the potential for unusual oar configurations allowed by side-engined design would e of marginal benefit only.

LT could not stand apart from Is friends in the PTEs, said Dr 3uarmby.

Dr Quarmby confirmed LT's policy of disposing of Fleetline puses while retaining open-platarm Routemaster buses in Cenral London and said that in LonIon crew operation was most practical as passengers could pet on and off open-platform iuses more quickly. No system of one-man bus operation with multi-fares allow loading times as fast as the Routemaster.

Plans were for London to stay with 50 per cent crew operation, though contrary to LT expecte tions the 20p flat-fare experiment in the suburban Harrow has been a success.

The number of passenger journeys declined slightly but stop times and running times have been improved. LT now thinks that the time is ripe to consider extending flat fares to the entire LT suburban bus network.
