THE DIESEL bus is so energy efficient that it will probably last until at least the beginning of the next century.
That was the underlying message in London Transport chief mechanical engineer Stan Smith's paper to the AMA conference last week.
He compared the energy efficiency of public and private transport, reported on LT experiments with lpg, and went on to describe the possibilities of natural gas, steam, and electric power.
An LT Routemaster fitted witllpg engine cost 5.14p per milt to operate, compared with 2.96F for a diesel equivalent.
