FIGURES published by the Institute of Petroleum for the first six months of 1974 show that the total demand during that period was down by 8.0 per cent over the 1973 return. But over 50m tons of refined petroleum were delivered into consumption from January to June this year. The lower total over the previous year is attributable to three main factors. First, the three-day week; secondly, the very mild winter and its effect on the home fuel demand; thirdly, price increases both in the supply of the crude product and in the price of delivery.
