THE. highways and vehicles committee of the Road Haulage Association, and representatives from the Traders Road Transport Association, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders and British Railways attended a vehicle noise demonstration at Hendon Aerodrome on Tuesday, organized by the Ministry of Transport.

The first tests were made on a runway with a badly worn surface and a wide variety of vehicles including tippers, artics and a coach were tested under varied conditions;. two of the vehicles were loaded with crates of empty milk bottles. In the most exacting test the vehicles were driven past the microphone

and noise meter in third gear with maximum acceleration, and. of 11 vehicles tested in this way. seven registered noise levelS above the 88-decibel limit proposed by the Ministry for existing vehicles.

Further tests were made on a wellsurfaced gentle incline on the Barnet By-pass, when only four out of 135 goods vehicles exceeded the 88-decibel limit. The results of the tests are being analysed by the R.H.A.
