imagine that the logistics and haulage industry could create such a large number of new jobs, that it would fly in the face of the evidence of the past three years. According to payroll data made public for the first time last week by Bacs Payment Schemes, the organisation behind direct debit, the number of salary and wage payments in the transport and storage sector fell by 18.9% between August 2007 and August 2010. Admittedly this drop has slowed (it was 9.8% in the first 12 months, 7.1% in the second and just 3.5% in the third), but the fall in salary payments is the second worst in all employment sectors, after construction.
