THE FUTURE OF the workforce at Langdon Group is safe now that German logistics giant Nagel Group has bought the Somersetbased reefer operator.

Mike Donoghue, who is Langdon's MD and chairman, says he is "pleased that the future for all Langdon's employees is secure now that they are part of a much larger group".

The Nagel Group is involved in chilled food distribution in 13 European countries, including Austria. Denmark and Germany, with 6,600 staff.

It has run its own depot in Dover for the past 10 years and was a trading partner with Langdons in the firm's Chillnet service.

Talks between the two companies over a possible purchase had been taking place for much of this war. An announcement was planned for October but a delay meant the sale has only just gone through.

Nagel's UK MD, Michael Schymik. says: "The acquisition was the next logical step to become more active in one of the key markets of Europe."

Langdons was the subject of a management buyout in 1986: under the Nagel deal the directors are committed to remain with Langdons for up to five years.

According to Companies House, turnover for the Langdon Group was £27.6m in 2003;its fixed assets totalled £18.5m.
