Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Police are warning that diesel theft could become a national epidemic with a growing number of organised gangs stealing fuel from vehicles and depots.

Cambridgeshire police say they have been hearing of diesel thefts "nearly every day" in the region since the beginning of summer.

Incidents in the Peterborough area have centred on "travellers" in vans stealing diesel and selling it for El a gallon.

Last week West Yorkshire polite confirmed they had arrested a number of people suspected of thefts from diesel bunkers in the Leeds area (CM 28 Oct-3 Nov). Up to 30 depots may have been hit.

The Freight Transport Association and Road Haulage Association are continuing to campaign for a reduction in diesel duty, but unless—or until—the Chancellor does so, operators are being advised to increase depot security
