“WHAT interested me in free enterprise
America was how easily they have accepted the concept of subsidies for public transport. In fact the Americans are being much more logical about their transport problems than we have been in recent years." This was said by the Minister of Transport, Mrs. Barbara Castle, when speaking at the Institute of Transport's 47th anniversary lunch in London on Tuesday.
The Minister said that we still had time in this country to build in from the start the sort of public transport provision we needed and to strike a sensible balance between more road building and more public transport "We must start thinking imaginatively about it", she said.
Mrs. Castle also had something to say about goods transport. "I believe that here again we
have been recklessly wasting assets in this country", she said. The development of container services called for the integration, not the separation, of the various stages of the container's handling. "We in this country have no time to lose if we are not to be left out of the race", she said, "and just because we shall never have resources on the scale they have in the United States, it is imperative that we make the fullest use of those we have. That is why we must end the separation of our publicly owned road and rail services—get them working as one modern efficient unit through the national freight organintion which must act as the spearhead of the container movement in this country, setting standards to industry and for the private haulier and offering new facilities to industry."
