Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

fitted with petrol engine. I use it only two or three days a week averaging 30 miles a week with occasional journey of 100 miles or so. I am thinking of changing over to a diesel engine. Would this be a good proposition?

ADiesel-engined vehicles show to

best advantage when engaged on longdistance operation both in respect of fuel consumption and life. Short journeys would not necessarily cause a shorter life for a diesel engine as compared with the petrol version. But the benefit normally obtained from the low fuel consumption of a diesel engine would be lost. it might also be more difficult to find garages competent to handle diesel engine repairs. In short, in your case it would not be worthwhile to change over to a diesel-engined vehicle.
