Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ANEW long-term project by Transport Equipment (Thornycroft), Ltd., is revealed by Sir John E. Thornycroft, chairman of John I. Thornycroft and Co., Ltd., in his annual statement, issued on Tuesday. It is a vehicle known as the Mastiff.

The Commercial Motor understands that the Mastiff will be a four-wheeler

for 14-ton gross loads. It is not yet in existence, but it is likely to be intro duced at the Commercial Motor Show next year.

Meanwhile, the Trusty class fourwheeler is being modified for a gross weight of 14 tons, the six-wheeler for 20 tons and the eight-wheeler for 24 tons. "A new 7.8-litre engine developing 112 b.h.p. and 350 lb.-ft. torque and a new 9.8-litre engine developing 140 b.h.p. and 420 lb.-ft, torque will be available for these classes of chassis types," says Sir John.

The vehicle manufacturing company had a satisfactory year and although turnover was slightly lower than in the previous year, the value of export orders increased.

Deliveries of the new Swiftsure model (described on pages 384-385) will begin early next year.

Sir John complains of purchase tax. He says that when it is levied as a percentage of sale price, it cannot fail to weaken the position of makers of specialized high-performance products, as compared with manufacturers of utilitarian standard designs produced in volume. In the long run this could not be in the interests of the United Kingdom if the present living standards were to be maintained.

A MONO the new models to be ra exhibited at the Scottish Show. which opens at Kelvin Hall, Glasgow, next Friday, will be a tractor version of the Morris-Commercial 7-tonner.

It will be shown with the Scammell quick-coupling gear and a semi-trailer, the complete unit measuring 20 ft. 3 in. overall. The specification includes the B.M.C. 4.7-litre oil engine giving 90 b.h.p., a 12-in. clutch, four-speed constant-mesh gearbox and Eaton twospeed rear axle of the spiral-bevel-gear type.

The exhibitors will be A. and D. Fraser, Ltd., Glasgow.
