Wm. Allchin, Ltd.

Petrol and Steam Exhibits.

This well-known company show one of their standard 5-ton steam wagons, fitted with brewers' high-sided body, to the order of Page and Overton, Ltd., of Croydon. It is of interest to note that this vehicle is the third built for this company. It will be found on Stand No. 150, Row X.

The wagon shown is a fine example of the best workmanship. It has a locotype boiler, upon which the -Whole engine is mounted. The latter has high and low pressure cylinders, but an auxiliary valve allows for the admission of high-pressure steam to the low-pressure cylinder when extra power is required. The well-known Stephenson link-motion is adopted.

Two speeds are allowed by the gearing, and the final drive is by roller chain to the oiltight differential cage on the rear axle. Each rear wheel is provided with the Allchin patent double-pin drive, and these wheels can be removed without disturbing the rest of the axle.

Two powerful brakes are fitted; one operates on a drum fixed to the axle, whilst the other acts on a drum bolted to the offside rear wheel. Both brakes operate together, but two controlling pedals are provided, one in the cab conveniently situated by the driver and the

other close to the footboard, so that it can be operated by the second man.

The water supply pump is worked by gearing frOm the crankshaft, a three-toene reduction being employed. The front axle is of the usual centrallypivoted type with a strong laminated , cross spring, the steering being by worm and wheel and chain.

A large water tank is situated under the -body.

_All the wheels are of the wood artillery type shod with North British Clincher tyres.

Leyland Motors, Ltd.

A particularly fine selection of exhibits is shown on this company's Stands, which are Nos. 106 and 112. It comprises the following vehicles, which are of types well known and largely used in the brew ing trade. • One four-ton model " " petrol vehicle fitted with sided body. One six-ton steam wagon fitted with the latest water-tube boiler. The engine has two high-pressure cylinders working at 250 lb. per square inch. The crankshaft, second motion shaft and compensating shaft run in Timken roller bearings. The platform dimensions are 14 ft. 6 ins. by 6 ft. 6 ins.

j. I. Thornycroft and Co., Ltd.

The exhibit of this company is located near the centre of the main hall on Stands Nos. 104 and 110. It consists of a 40 hp. J-type fitted with an open-sided lorry body to carry four tons. The engine has four cylinders cast in pairs, the bore and stroke being 114 mm. and 152 mm. respectively. Ll'he drive is taken through a Ferodo-lined cone clutch of pressed-steel construction to a four. spedand reverse gearbox, a leather disc coupling being interposed. The gearbox is a one-piece casting, fitted with a large inspection cover, on an extension of which is mounted the change-speed operating mechanism. Both engine and gearbox have threepoint suspension, thus rendering them immune from risk of damage owing to twisting of the frame. The final drive is by overhead-type worm gearing, which, together with the differential gear, is slung from the cover of the cast-steel axle casing. The removal of the whole of this gearing is thus rendered a matter of extreme simplicity..

The Sentinel Waggon Works, Ltd., are showing two fine vehicles on their stand. One is a aix-tanner fitted with a lorry body. This vehicle is for Mr. N.McColl, cartage contractor' of, Bark-. log. It will take six tons on the 'wagon and four on a trailer.

The other machine is a four-tonner fitted with platform body. Both, modela . are fitted with exactly similar engines, boilers and front axles • the larger one has a stronger frame and back axle; it is also lower geared.

The general points of the Sentinel wagon are too well known to need minute description. The boiler is of the upright tepe, and is so designed that the firebox can be droppedfor inspection; all interior surfaces are then visible. The engine • is— of the underneath type and is totally enclosed.

Clayton and Co., Ltd.

An exhibik which should certainly not be missed is the 5-ton W.D. subsidy type Karrier. The chassis is fitted with a flat platform body, provided with stanchions and chains, and a cab which provides considerably more comfort for the driver than is usual. The windscreen is carried up to meet the roof, it is divided in the centre, and that portion in front of the driver is hinged.

As is -usual, the vehicle has a Tyler engine, which is very acceasible, and is fitted with largo crankcase inspection doors. The clutch is a leather-lined cone. Thence the drive is through a leather-disc universal joint and castellated shaft to the 4-speed gearbox. The latter is suspended front a sub-frame. From the gearbox a. short coupling shaft takes the drive to the front end of the propeller shaft.

Jaw type universal joiots of unusually stout construction are enclosed in dustproof covers.

The torque member is a tubular extension of the rear axle casing and is supported at its front end in a large spherical housing.

The rear axle is a banjo-type steel forging, the banjo portion of which holds the cast steel casing of the double reduction bevel:and spur gearing.
