• The Health and Safety Executive is investigating Cumbrian haulier Stalkers Transport after a toxic leak from one of its trucks put 27 people in hospital.

Northamptonshire police were alerted this week by dozens of calls after the Stalkers vehicle called into a McGregor Cory depot backing on to the Watford Gap service station on the M1 and pungent fumes spread over a 10-miles radius.

The chemical, benzyl mercaptan, had been leaking from a drum and the fumes caused widespread eye irritation and breathing difficulties.

McGregor Cory says it is reviewing the conditions under which Stalkers can use its sitc.

For 12 hours after the incident on the night of 19 April, Northants police warned residents close to the Watford Gap to close their doors and windows.
