• Top sources at Daf have scotched rumours circulating at the Tipcon exhibition that Daf is about to buy Steyr Trucks.
Harry Kuiper, Dafs communications manager, says: "We are not in the process of buying Steyr, but we are talking with Steyr about cooperation. . . we are looking to see if there are opportunities for synergy."
Kuiper says Daf sees three important "benefits" from closer ties with Steyr; the Austrian company's expertise in 4x4 traction, its presence in Eastern Europe, and its interests in China.
Industry commentators suggest a link with Steyr would also provide Daf with a new top-rated power unit. At present, the Dal's most powerful unit is the 11.6-litre engine rated at 283kW (380hp). Steyr is known to be developing a six-cyclinder engine rated at over 300kW (400hp). In return, Steyr could find use for the Enasa/Daf Cabtec cab in its range of heavy trucks. Steyr's managing director Ernst Pranckl told CM: "We are looking for co-operation partners where we can produce and exchange certain components and products."
Pranckl says Steyr is talking to four truck manufacturers (including Daf). "They are widely spread," he adds. "They are not all based in Europe."
It will be some time before any co-operation proposals are put to the Steyr board, says Pranckl: dicussions started two months ago.
