and accurate assessment of the lorry drivers' lot in Commercial Motor (CM 30 March-5 April). Like the driver who gave Blue Tango a lift from Reading to Cirencester, I've not been appreciated by most of my bosses over the past 30 years.
It was only 18 months ago that I was given the opportunity of working with a decent vehicle which had a sleeper cab. It has made the world of difference about the way I feel about the job, and I now enjoy driving again and don't mind the nights away because I've got a bed behind my seat if I need it, and a heater in the cab as well.
I will still use the bed and breakfast places if I can find them, because I feel it is important to get away from your work-place when off duty. But being assured of a comfortable night's sleep, I am now fitter and more relaxed when driving. Unfortunately, the abuse my body has been subjected to for 30 years has taken its toll. I have back problems, feel the chilly mornings more than I should, and doubt that I will be able to keep driving for another 15 years up to my 65th birthday.
Nevertheless, it is nice to have better working conditions even if the transport manager's attitude towards me as a human being hasn't changed much. But Hook at it this way, I am enjoying my job, 1 have as friends hundreds of terrific people connected with my job: drivers, landladies, publicans, company directors, people from all walks of life. I wouldn't swop my lifestyle and income for that of my transport manager or the bosses of the outfit which employs me.
Al] their money and power is insignificant in comparison with my home life, with my ability to manipulate their instructions to virtually suit myself and the knowledge that friendship and the respect for others generate the most powerful influence of all.
