• Leyland Bus is to carry out a "major development" at its Workington, Cumbria plant — but has yet to reveal what form it will take.
It is currently advertising for a manufacturing manager to take part in "the biggest and most radical expansion in the company's history," involving "the transformation of our major manufacturing facility in Cumbria."
A Leyland Bus spokesman said last week that "it looked increasingly likely" that the 810M chassis of parent Volvo would be produced in the UK.
It could be several months before an announcement is made, but the modern Workington factory should be a strong contender for Volvo manufacture in the UK.
This would also give Volvo a base in the EEC, ready for 1992.
