• Sitaclean, the French refuse collection company which entered the UK market last November, has won its first British contract in industrial Derbyshire.
The firm's tender of £886,000 a year for the fiveyear refuse collection contract with Erewash Borough Council was more than £133,000 cheaper than the in-house bid put together by the council workforce. It also beat two other bids.
Sam Mathews, Erewash's director of technical services, says the council was forced to put refuse collection out to tender under Government legislation: "Sitaclean was the lowest acceptable tender," he says.
Under the contract, Sitaclean will use council vehicles. It is expected that only 15 vehicles will be used; the remainder may be sold. The council's staff of 60 has been given the opportunity to transfer to Sitaclean. Sitaclean is a subsidiary company of Societe Industrielle de Transports Automobile (SITA), which has more than 20% of French refuse collection business. It is the fourth largest refuse collection and cleaning firm in the world.
Last March, Sitaclean general manager Richard Barlow said the firm was preparing to bid for 22 contracts and expected to bid for more than 30 others in the coming months (CM 2329 March).
