• Schmitz Trailers, the German reefer specialist, is to open a UK assembly plant this year.
Schmitz, which, with its Cargobull range of products, claims to be Germany's second biggest bodybuilder, has had a UK sales and marketing operation in Wokingham, Berkshire, since November.
Schmitz UK managing director Preston Allen and business development director Peter a Webb have approached 14 bodybuilders here with a view to setting up a joint company to assemble body shells imported from Germany.
They are ready to go it alone by establishing their own assembly plant, although this • would require more time to organise.
The UK plant will only fit shells to rigid chassis and will not build kits. Allen says rival Norfrig has already made this mistake with its link with Silver Arrow.
A UK operation would cut up to £300 off the cost of assembling a body on a UK manufacturer's chassis, which currently has to be shipped to one of Schmitz's German plants, he says.
