PIRELLI'S conversion of a loss of £25m in 1981-82 to a profit of £4.6m in 1984 is a tribute to the new realism in trade unions as well as to resolute management. Representatives of the company's 3,500 workers in Britain co-operated in the severe measures needed to restore viability and not a day's work was lost.
This is a "particular source of satisfaction" to the managing director, Sandre Veronesi. The result, he says, is that productivity is now higher in the British factories than in any Pirelli European plant and is exceeded only in Brazil. Thus encouraged, the company has allocated £5m to the production of new low-profile truck tyres in Britain.
