THE ROLE of London Transport in wartime can be seen at an exhibition — London Transport at War (May 3 till November 27) — at the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden.
Vehicles on show include a Second World War bus with masked headlamps and antiblast window netting, and a Guy Arab Utility bus built for LT service at the same time. A wartime newsreel features the training of women conductors.
In the First World War, London buses were used as troop transport in France. A Btype bus of that period is on display. Two veteran drivers who took buses to the Western Front in 1914 talk on video about their adventures, and the then revolutionary role of women in public service is marked by a video interview with one of the London General Omnibus Company' original "clippies", who served in 1916.
