FOLLOWING TESTS carried out by Department of Transport engineers into the braking performance of the Toyota Space Cruiser minibus, which showed that under heavy braking they could become unstable, Toyota GB is to recall around 2,200 UK Space Cruiser models for modifications to their braking systems.
spokesman.
However, the Dip says that investigations are continuing into the compliance of the vehicle with the Type Approval requirements for its braking system. Until the DTp is satisfied that it does comply, it will not approve any more vehicles for sale in this country.
Criticism of the Space Cruiser's braking performance came first from the Consumer's Association journal Which?, which recently tested four Space Cruiser models and found they had "potentially dangerous brakes".
It described the vehicles as "very unstable" from 60mph and under heavy braking, said "The front of the vehicles nosedived and the back wheels locked and sometimes left the ground."
All the 2,000 plus vehicles affected were built before February 1985. Vehicles sold after this date have already been modified. The work will be carried out by Toyota dealers, and owners will be notified by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Centre at Swansea.
