SCANIA'S 6X2 P92 38 tonne gcw tractive unit will be available here in the autumn.
A pre-production vehicle, built for British national type approval, was made available for demonstration drives by operators and the press last week at Chobham, Surrey.
The P92M 6x2 RC28 is fitted with the DSC9, 205kW (275hp), charge cooled version of the 8.5 litre engine introduced last year. The 92 Series cab, chassis and driveline components are shared with other models in the modular GPR range.
Even before its 92 Series 6x2 is introduced, Scania holds the lead in the UK six wheeler tractive unit market Some 20 per cent of the 1,660 Scania tractive units over 29 tonnes gcw registered here last year were sixwheelers, equipped with a third lifting trailing axle.
Much interest at Chobham was generated by a 92 Series drawbar combination equipped with CAG, Scania's computeraided gearshifting system. The drawbar system on this vehicle was Crane Fruehauf's GLZ close-coupled type.
CAG is now offered as an option on many Scania tractive units, rigids and coaches.
