Eight wheeled Chassis as the Bases of Two A .E.0 . Vehicles Built for Dealing with Oil in Bulk
THE latest vehicles to be included among the A.E.C.s operated by Pickfords, Ltd., are two Mammoth Major eight-wheeled 3,400-gallon tankers designed for oil transport. These are now working from the company's Liverpool branch.
The elliptical tanks are of the twocompartment type, and were built of Fin, mild-steel plates, electrically welded, by Thompson Bros. (Bilston), Ltd. Insulation between -the tank com.partments and the outer covering of 22-gauge steel is provided by 2 ins. of Alfol. Each compartment has a manhole with an internal diameter of 1 ft. 4 ins., a vacuum-relief valve and a transverse baffle plate into which a hole 1 ft. 6 ins. in diameter has been cut. There is also a circular sump for each compartment, in which longitudinal drainage channels terminate.
All outlets are grouped on the near side and are fitted with 4-in. -valves actuated by hand-wheels. The outlets are connected externally with 4-in. four-way pieces attached to light-gauge steel pipe lines of similar diameter, These are carried the full length of the tank, have a fall of 2 ins., and, at the rear, are linked by a flexible pipe coupling to a 3-in, back-geared rotary pump. This has suction and delivery branches 4 ins. diameter and is driven from a power take-off.
The tank is supported on the chassis
by steel mountings, consisting of T irons and U-type feet ribbed internally for strength and welded direct to the Ts. A light platform runs the full length of the tank and access to this is gained by a ladder placed „immediately behind the cab.
