Council Meeting in London: Tribute to the Late President.
A council meeting of the Road Haulage Association was held on April 25, when Mr. R. W. Sewill, the chairman, referred to the great loss the Association had suffered by the death of its president, Mr. E. C. Marston, paying a splendid tribute to his excellent services on behalf of the haulage industry.
Mr. C. Hodgson was duly elected a member of the Council, representing the new area of Devon and Cornwall. Reports on the activities of various area committees were reviewed.
Mr. Todd was elected to represent the Association, with Mr. Gupwell, on the Council of the Roads Improvement Association.
In connection with the records to be kept on vehicles under the terms of the Road and Rail Traffic Act, Mr. Nicholl stated that the Minister of Transport was now considering certain recommendations made to him by the Traffic Advisory Council on this matter.
A further batch of 417 applications for membership was accepted, bringing the total membership up to 4,616.
On the question of haulage rates, Mr. Sanders reported that a sub-corn824 mittee of the rates committee was preparing a schedule of basic costs for submission, and hoped to have it ready very shortly.
With regard to the subject of the standard load-line indicator, a resolution was passed and sent to the Board of Trade. In this connection, Mr. J. Guyatt (London), is authorized by the British Standards Institution to fit and seal vehicles with the approved indicator.
Hull Branch Meets.
On April 27, the Hull branch of the Road Haulage Association, held a wellattended general meeting, at which Mr. Donaldson-Wright, vice-chairman of the Association, and Mr. Butterwick, chairman of the Leeds branch, were present. The former spoke on the rapid growth of the Association, so much so, that regional areas were now being formed throughout the country, in order to cope with the work. He was pleased to hear that the Hull branch would soon have its schedule of rates completed to submit to the council.
It was suggested that a central office be opened in Leeds to represent the Yorkshire area. • National Advice Scheme for Lorry Drivers?
A suggestion for a national scheme to assist lorry drivers to obtain expert information on the mechanical state of their vehicles, was put forward at a general meeting of the Plymouth and District branch of the Road Haulage Association, at Plymouth, last Saturday, under the chairmanship of Mr. C. Hodgson (St. Austell). The suggestion received the warm support of the meeting, and the chairman said that he would lay it before the R.H.A. authorities in London.
The office of president fell to Mr. J.
R. F. Bradford (Plympton). Mr. W. H. Burner (Plymouth) was elected vice-president, whilst Mr. C. Worden (Plymouth), who had been acting as temporary honorary secretary, was confirmed in his office.
The committee was constituted as follows :--Messrs. E. Baker, H. Gilbert, S. Mavin, A. J. Hortop, G. Stevens, G. White, and G. Pantry.
Mr. Hodgson said that in the Cornwall district, any member who was guilty of undercutting was liable to a fine of £25 for the first offence and £100 for any subsequent offence. If the penalty were not paid, membership of the Association was forfeited, and the offender was finally reported to the Traffic Commissioners.
