Bang on track • Freightconnection 93 will be held at the Euroterminal at Trafford Park, Manchester. A bridge has been completed over ffie Bridgewater Canal to complete road links to the site: its Channel Tunnel rail link will be completed in June.

Alongside the exhibition the Freightconnection 93 conference will be held on 6-7 October. It will concentrate on intermodal transport.

Losing weight • Vehicle manufacturers, supply companies and designers will be exploring the need for fuel-saving, weight reduction, and the need to cope with the increasingly stringent safety demands at a conference hosted by the Institute of British Carriage and Automobile Manufacturers.

BODITEK, to be held at Warwick University on 18 March, will examine the commercial viability of hitech designs in motor sport and aerospace industries, and will discuss the merits of driveline weight reduction, compared to the more obvious savings available in body construction. Parisian rendezvous • The 10th Paris International Week of Transport and Logistics (SITL), already linked with the forum on Electronic Data Interchange in Transport and Logistics, will be held alongside Logibox—an exhibition on multimodal transport systems and logistics equipment. The three events cover the entire logistics chain. SITL will be held on 30 March-2 April.

Cost controls • Herts-based Al International is hosting a seminar on 27 April on distribution and scheduling using constraint-based technology. It will focus on scheduling and distribution problems and look at how constraints have been used to reduce costs and time.

PUBLICATIONS Bus drivers' guide • A booklet guiding drivers of PCVs and their employers on tachographs and hours has been produced by the Department of Transport. The booklet, reference PSV75 (Rev 1/93), is available from HMSO. A booklet covering goods vehicles (GV 262) is available from Traffic Area Offices.

Hi-tech news • A quarterly newsletter to keep the transport industry informed on research into the use of advanced transport telematics (ATT) is available from the University of Westminster. The university is involved in the European Community-funded METAFORA project which is examining the use of satellite communications for commercial vehicles.

Health warning • Smaller companies could be wasting money by needlessly employing expensive health and safety consultants, says the Health and Safety Executive. It has now issued a pamphlet to help clarify the situation.

Contact (0742) 892345 ASSOCIATIONS Modal members • An association has been formed to promote intermodal transport. The European Intermodal Association (EIA), based in Brussels, is open to road/rail operators, railways and companies specialising in transport-related logistics.

Members will pay an annual subscription based on a percentage of turnover. The EIA will cover all aspects of the combined sector, says general-secretary Bernard Teillet, "from technological development and marketing to the quality of service and the productivity of combiequipment and intermodal hubs".

TRAINING Training trainers • From 5 April all instructors seeking accreditation with the Independent Training Standards Scheme and Register (I'FSSAR) will have to complete a training course.

The Association of Industrial Truck Trainers has stopped streamlining applications under grandfather rights from instructors registered with other recognised bodies.

SERVICES Leyland lifeline • Commercial vehicle recruitment company, Campbell Automotive Recruitment is offering a recruitment helpline for Leyland Daf employees and dealers.

The company says it has already been approached by other truck manufacturers to act on their behalf to help find as many jobs as possible for the Leyland casualties.

PRODUCTS Spy in the cab • Birmingham-based Leafield AVM has introduced an in-cab computer, the VeMIS, to help transport managers assess their drivers' performance. It can record the speed of a vehicle, its engine temperature, whether the door has been left open and drivers' hours.

Leafield is also looking at introducing a sensor which will record the temperature of reefer units. The system costs between £450 and £800 (ex-VAT) per truck.

Fleet glimpse • The Euro Group claims to be the first organisation to provide a total solution to fleet management from a single source. It has three control centres within the UK and another is due to open this year.

Each control centre provides the complete range of products. However, each product can be purchased separately and interfaced to clients' current fleet management software and fuel monitoring systems.

The group will be exhibiting at the Fleet Show at Silverstone, Northants, 20 and 23 April.

ROADNEWS Plans for MI • The DOT has released details of plans to widen the northbound carriageway of the M1 between J 9 and 10 this year.

Improvements to the A5 at its junction with the M1 are also to be carried out.
