The first prototype was Leyland-based, but a second example (also built by Cartwrights of Altrincham) uses a Daily 40-10 chassis downplated to 3.5 tonnes and powered by Iveco's own 2.5-litre turbo-diesel.
Decisions on the viability of either vehicle, to complement or replace existing panel vans and 7.5-tonners, will be made after service trials.
Parcelforce has been using the first prototype at a number of depots, assessing features meant to improve access and economy for urban deliveries. The aerodynamic vehicle's main innovation is the use of lightweight Carbofont body panels. These are designed to improve durability and increase volume without compromising weight: the prototypes offer a load capacity of about 15m3 with a payload of 1,500kg. Both high-cube vans are designed for ease of cross-cab access and feature electrically operated side doors; the Iveco uses a lightweight manual roller-shutter at the rear. It will be exhibited at the FRTE show in May.
