DART Containerline is to offer a nine-day service between Southampton and St John's, Newfoundland, following the introduction of a new feeder service from Halifax.

The service will be operated by the Newfoundland Container Line. Dart containers will be transferred from the Dart vessels for onward shipment from Halifax each Thursday.

Fleet doubled

BOWDEN Freight International has doubled its vehicle fleet with the acquisition of J. C. Prout Transport which is to be transferred to the Bowden Greenwich depot.

Also acquired is the Prout fleet of boxvans operating on contract work. The Bowden fleet also operates on general haulage work with a depot at Nottingham.

Tyne route

A NEW SCHEME for a western by-pass for Newcastle has been added to the Department of Transport trunk road preparation pool. The new road will extend the present Gateshead by-pass from Scotswood Bridge over the River Tyne to join the Carlisle to Newcastle trunk road.

Appraisal of the scheme will now go ahead and once this is complete other road schemes in the area will be re-assessed and their timing re-examined.

Depot opening

WILKINSON Transport has opened its new £320,000 Oxford depot at the Milton trading estate near Abingdon.

The depot will handle 19 collection and delivery service rounds, and the company will be closing the Wallingford depot.
