THE MI had presented the authorities i with a new complication so far as the reckoning of the average speed of vehicles was concerned, said Mr. R. E. G. Brown, secretary of the London and Horne Counties Division of the Traders' Road Transport Association, when he spoke to a meeting of Hertfordshire members last week.
If a vaticle were normally restricted to 30 m.p.h., it was possible to maintain an average of 22+ m.p.h. in certain circumstances, he said. This yardstick had been swept away by the new motorway. "It wrecks any arithmetical check on average speed," said Mr. Brown.
URGENT SHOULDER MEASURES AAEASURES which might be taken to IVI strengthen the " hard " shoulders of the M1 are being urgently examined by the Minister of Transport. He told Mr. P. N. Hocking (Cons., Coventry South) that the shoulders had suffered damage through heavy use while still immature.
Mr. Hocking asked about the provision of kerbs on the motorway, and the Minister said that raised kerbs at the side of the carriageway might be struck by vehicles, and edges to the shoulder would interfere with drainage. Other means of defining the outer part of the shoulder were being considered.
