Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

'ANS by Leeds Corporation for a large-scale switching of bus routes city terminals to reduce traffic conon were mentioned during an al in Leeds, last week, against the

:shire Licensing Authority's don to allow the corporation's Is-Guiscley bus service to be re:d in the city. The appeal was a one by the Airchorough and ;forth Urban District Councils. r. C. Raymond Dean, for the Rants, said the original route took mgers from Guiseley through the -e of the city to the Eastgate bus In; but the amended route, to the Rockingham Street bus station, id not go through the city centre. e passengers would have to walk ir that 20 minutes would be added •

;dr working day.

tr the corporation, Miss E. M. 'es said the application was one of roup concerned with the large reorganization of public transport services in the city. The removal of trams, with the consequent increase in buses, meant mote traffic, and with the expansion also in pidvate traffic the situation in the Corn Exchange area was becoming impossible.

The congestion was made more difficult by the number of public service vehicles which had their terminal points in streets, so one of the corporation's proposals was, as far as possible, to get these termini off the 'highways and into bus stations, The Eastgate bus station alone was inadequate to meet the situation, and the corporation's plan was that services from north and west should be routed to the new bus station in Rockingham Street. and from south and cast to the Eastgate station. This would save mileage and avoid congestion.

A few days before the hearing of the appeal, Leeds Transport Committee decided to recommend the city council /hat, subject to the approval of the Yorkshire Licensing Authority, the Leeds-Guiseley service be discontinued on the ground that it was uneconoimic and that the 11 buses involved could be put to use on other services.

It is expected that the West Yorkshire Road Car Co., Ltd.. and the Samuel Ledgard undertaking, who already operate on the route, will take over the service between them.
