LAMPLOYEES of the London Transport Executive, provincial bus companies and municipal transport undertakings have been awarded payment of about time and a quarter for work on Saturdays after 1 p.m., instead of the rate of time and a half claimed. This concession becomes effective in the first full pay week after February 23.
Drivers and conductors of London central buses will receive an extra 9d.
an hour; drivers and conductors of trams and trolleybuses in London 80.; drivers of country buses and coaches, 8d.; maintenance staff in the London area, 70.; and workers in provincial company and municipal undertakings, 7d.
The independent tribunal set up by the Minister of Labour to deal with the claim states that the men should have more leisure at more suitable times than at present, but recognizes that reorganization of schedules for this purpose is at the moment impracticable.
The tribunal declares that no case has been made out to establish the principle that where work is performed after 1 p.m. on Saturday as part of the normal working week, it should necessarily be remunerated at enhanced rates. In particular, the award emphaslies that there is no case for payment on Saturday afternoons at the rates paid for work on Sundays or agreed public holidays.

This change has been made by the Motor Vehicles (Third Party Risks) (Amendment) Regulations, 1949.
