THE Transport Engineer's Handbook (£11, Kogan Page) takes over where the Transport Manager's Handbook ends. It provides in a single volume a relevant source of information enabling the engineer to refer to a wide range of recent technical developments pertaining to commercial vehicle operation.
The book, edited by Commercial Motor's engineering editor, Graham Montgomerie, comprises 15 well illustrated chapters on individual topics written by experts in their field while the back of the book lists a number of companies providing specialist services.
A section on diesel engine development, for instance, discusses in a straight forward manner the advances in adiabatic engine design and performance.
The merits of the various turbocharging and chargecooling systems are aired while later alternative forms of fuels are discussed.
Electric vehicles have been slow to catch on; the book discusses why and looks at the viability of operating a small electric vehicle.
The section on engine/transmission matching will, I am sure, make many engineers reach for their calculators to work out if they have chosen the right combination for their particular operation.
