LONDON operators are bracing themselves for the near certainty of-the Wood Inquiry into lorry bans recommending that some extensive controls could be imposed.
The report, commissioned in 1981 by the Greater London Council to establish the effects of various controls being imposed at between eight and 32.5 tonnes, is likely to be in GLC councillors' hands within days.
Its contents have yet to be announced, and may not be for some time after the councillors receive their copies, but the two industry nominees on the inquiry panel — the Freight Transport Association's Reg Brown and Fine Fare's Stanley Baker — will at least add notes of dissent to the main body of the report, if not minority findings.
This has always been a danger with such a widely-based panel of inquiry, as some of the arguments between industry and environmentalists are bound to be irreconcilable.
It seems likely, though, that the main report will give credibility to the GLC's desire to introduce more lorry controls, although it does not make specific recommendations.
