From this month BR is no longer engaging in international smalls traffic. Perhaps you didn't notice BR's public notices in The Tines, the Daily Telegraph and The Scotsman recently, but BR is withdrawing from international sundries traffic and putting traffic on to the road.

The railways have decided that only unit loads of one lift and one drop are for them, but point out that NCL provides alternative facilities.

That's a nice present for Brian Hayward to come back to from holiday next week. Brian, NCL's new managing director, is going to need all the help he can get if he has to pull the NFC's big loss-maker round the bend.

He's made a start recruiting help, indeed he's after 11,000 helpers, all NCL employees. "I've been down to the depots asking the staff what's wrong with NCL," he said.

I believe he 'had some funny (strange) answers, but more than a few useful ones, too.
