The SD Gully/Cesspool Emptier is based on the SD Single Cab NN chassis fitted with a Leyland 6.98 diesel engine and five-speed constantmesh gearbox. The 5,000-litre (1,100gal) tank is of all-welded construction and is fitted with a fully opening rear door. The I tank has inter-connecting corn , partments and the fully counter-balanced overhead suction arm permits a traverse of 270. Provision is made for the draining of surplus water, leaving dry sludge only for unloading.

The Series 22 Revopak refuse collection vehicle is a sixwheeler with a 4.42m (14ft Sin) wheelbase and a gvw of 22.4 tonnes (22 tons). It is powered by a turbocharged Leyland 410 engine driving through a sixspeed gearbox to the doubledrive rear axle.

The body has 16.8cum (22cuyd) of free air-space and the Revopak loading mechanism comprises an hydraulically powered rake moving in an elliptical path compressing the refuse against an ejector plate which moves progressively forward in the body, acting against hydraulic resistance. Fixed tines retain the refuse in the body and clear the teeth of the moving rake.

Another manufacturer with a numerically impressive list of exhibits is Norba-UK. The display will include six vehicles covering the Ferret. Constrictor, Intermittent and Container Hoist range of application.

The Constructor can be specified on a wide range of chassis including among others Bedford, Dennis, Ford and Seddon. The speed of loading is approximately 2.3curn / min (3cuyd/min) as a short continuously rotating screw semiulverises and compresses the refuse into the container and against the ejection panel. The discharge is by means of an ejection panel which, the company claims, reduces the weight ratio on the rear axle in comparison with a conventional tipping system and permits a lower ceiling height when discharged into an incineration or pulverisation plant.

The Norba Ferret has a narrow body and is designed for negotiating narrow roads in town centres. The container has a potential loading capacity of 23cum (30 cuyd) and can be mounted on a Bedford, Chrysler, Ford or Leyland chassis. The loading rate is approximately 1.9cum/min (2.5 cuyd/ min).

Ronald Perham Ltd will exhibit an example of the HushPacker refuse collection vehicle which can be constructed on any make of chassis with a gvw rating of 13/14 tons. The body is constructed of high-tensile, rust-resistant steel plate on a frame work of hollow section steel tubing. The compacting mechanism is fully enclosed, self-lubricating and requires no routine maintenance apart from oil level checks. The rear door is raised for discharge by two small lifting rams and the body is tipped by a front mounted ram.

Lacre Ltd, which claims to be the country's oldest manufacturer of sweepers, will be well represented. The smallest model to be shown, the Lacre Module, is designed for operating in tight corners—its turning circle is only 5.86m (19ft 3in). The multi-segment hydraulically driven main brush and the individually operated retractable gutter brushes can be assisted with a water-spray system. A 270litre (60gal) supply feeds a high pressure pump which powers the water through individually controlled sprays under each side and across the front of the Module.

The transit speed of the Module is 24km/h (15mph) and the maximum cleaning speed is 13.7km/h (8.5mph) The Lacre Compact can be supplied on Bedford, Chrysler, Ford or Leyland chassis according to customer preference.

The Compact TG basic unit is a 1.07m (3ft Sin) gutter brush/ suction nozzle combination. The fully floating gutter brush allows a 305mm (12in) deviation from the line of travel without losing kerb contact and it has automatic suction compensation to allow for varying debris.

Based on a Bedford KMM chassis/cab, a hosereel cess-pit emptier with a 9,090-litre (2,000 gal) mild steel tank will be exhibited by Fergussons Tankers of Portsmouth. Installed between the cab and the tank is a 120ft x 3in hose reel which is fitted with electro-mechanicalirewind.

In addition to its normal range of refuse collectors, Transtrend Vehicles Ltd of Kingston upon Thames is introducing the Litterpress—a sideloading compaction refuse collector. A compression plate moves fore and aft by cable and electro-hydraulic power pack or by double-acting hydraulic ram and pto according to type. The loading is through the front shutters on both sides of the vehicle while the refuse is ejected by opening the rear door and using the compression plate to the full extent of its travel, A hydraulic safety lock is incorporated to ensure that the compression plate is not operable while the shutters are, open. The compression plate travel is on a backbone channel unit with a wear resistant composite sliding block carrier.

Taking pride of place on the David MacKrill Engineering stand will be a 16/19 Maclift container handling unit on a Ford DI614 chassis for the City of Westminster. Other Maclift exhibits will include a Leyland Clydesdale with a Maclift Mk V 16/19XL for London Brick, Bulk gritters and snow ploughs will be exhibited by Atkinson's of Clitheroe. The snowploughs are available for farm tractors, commercial vehicles and Land-Rovers.

On the component side, three of Perkins Engines' most widely used power units will be on show. The most powerful of these, the T6.354 is rated at 115kW (155bhp) at 2,600rpm. As well as automotive units, Perkins also supply industrial units for auxiliary power in municipal applications such as street sweepers and gully emptiers.
