of French design and is shown on a Ford chassis with a 3.7m (12ft 3in) wheelbase.

The Power Xo chassis from Steelfab Ltd can pick up, trans port, tip and drop off any one of a number of specialised containers or bodies. The chassis can be towed by most agricultural industrial tractors and the tipping gear is powered by the conventional in-built tractor hydraulics. On show will be the Power Xo chassis, a 6.1 cum (8cuyd) refuse container and a 4cum (5.3cuyd) flat bottom container which facilitates "roll-on/roll-off loading.

Two Cabac battery electric street cleansing vehicles will form the display of Smiths Electric Vehicles Ltd. One has a 3.2cum (4.2cuyd) capacity end tipping, side-loading aluminium body with twin-ram hydraulic tipping gear manually operated from the vehicle walkway. The other features a bin carrier body with 15 heavy-duty polythene bins held in place by hinged lids. Both vehicles have a crew cab with space for five or six crew members.

Volvo's "city "-engined F86 chassis will be in the exhibition in refuse collection form fitted with a Norba body. Plated for operation at 16 tons gvw it has a payload capacity of around 6 tons. The five-man crew-cab fitted with rearward-f acing seats, is of aluminium composite construction with a nearside entrance door.

The " city " engine is the TD 70D turbocharged unit which was specially designed to reduce exhaust emissions. The power output is 122kW (163 bhp) at 2,400rpm and recent noise level tests on the vehicle recorded a maximum exterior noise level of 81dBA. The chassis is constructed from parallel pressed channel sections and the steering is power assisted. The Volvo eight-speed range-change gearbox is specified.

The hydraulically operated belt-feed gritting vehicle from Charrold-Huntingdon is one of a new range developed for snow and ice clearance on motorways and trunk roads. The hopper is made from exterior grade plywood faced on both sides with grp and supported in a fabricated steel subframe. The conveyor in the base of the body has an endless rubber covered belt with nylon reinforcement and this is supported on close-pitch idlers with shaft seals to prevent bearing corrosion. The material can be spread up to a width of Ilm (36ft) (and controls are provided to vary the density from 10 to 68grams/sqm (0.3 to 2oz/sqyd).

On show for the ,first time in the UK will be the Multilift ML series of ground-level demountable equipment for fitting to two and three-axle vehicles. The equipment is complementary to the existing Multilift CL range which continues with five models covering all sizes of commercial vehicles. It employs a linear chain which can be used to transfer laden containers from the lifting vehicle horizontally on to a drawbar trailer in approximately 60 seconds.

Glover, Webb and Liversedge Ltd, which has been supplying refuse collection vehicles to local authorities for nearly 50 years, will exhibit a selection of machines from its range.

The Grenadier has a fullwidth hopper which is swept clear of the refuse continuously or intermittently as the operator wishes; a single complete cycle taking approximately 15 seconds. The Grenadier is available in two sizes; the 18 requires a 13/14ton chassis and the 21 a 15/16ton chassis.

The Musketeer continuous loading refuse collector has a body and hopper constructed, of aluminium alloy with steel frame and floor. The hopper contains a mechanical-driven screw which breaks, masticates and packs refuse of all kinds into the body which Glover, Webb maintain makes it particularly suitable for plastic sack collections.

Dennis Motors Ltd of Guildford will have a variety of equipment on show including the new small compressiontype refuse collection vehicle with ejection discharge powered by a six-cylinder diesel engine offering a legal payload of 4i to 5 tons with an intermittent/continuous loading option.

The Bulkmaster is designed to accommodate open collection of household and industrial refuse and mechanised emptying of most types of containers and bins. The Paxit is an ejection discharge refuse collector with a body capacity of 38 to 53cum (50 or 70cuyd) capable of carrying loads of up to 7 tons.

Several models from the SAM range of Jack Allen (Motor Bodies) Ltd are to be exhibited at Torbay including Colectomatic refuse collection systems on the new Seddon Atkinson 200 series chassis.

Based on the Reliant TW9 three-wheeler chassis, the Melford sweeper is 1.49m (4ft 101in) " narrow " for coping with shopping precincts and narrow passages. It has two identical independently variable engines—one for driving the other for sweeping—and a vacuum wander hose for dealing with difficult corners and bus shelters. It can be converted for snow clearance, gritting or salt spreading and the hopper has a. capacity of up to Llcum (40cuft).

The Melford suction sweeper has an automatic hydrostatic transmission which gives controlled sweeping speeds up to I lkm/h (7mph) and a maximum transit speed of 40knith (25mph). The sweeping width is 1.8m (5ft 11 in) maximum and the tipping height is 1.3m (4ft 3in).

Six examples from the municipal range of Chrysler United Kingdom on show will include a Dodge K 2413T skip loader on a 5.1m (16ft 8in) wheelbase. The drive-line combination consists of Perkins V8 8.9-litre (540cuin) engine, fivespeed gearbox and two-speed 38DT bogie. The bodywork is by Powell Duff ryn.

Three Commando chassis will be shown under the name of Karrier with similar mechanical specifications including the Perkins 5.8-litre (354cuin) engine. One of the Commandos will be in road sweeper form on a 3.1m (loft) wheelbase fitted with left-handdrive controls and power steering.

A Ford D1311 chassis provides the base for the Rolba bulk gritter which has a hopper capacity of 5cum (6.5cuyd). The power source for the getter is a variable output pump which is driven by means of a power grip belt from the propeller shaft of the vehicle, This has the advantage that the preselected rate of spread is maintained regardless of road speed.

Six vehicles from the Leyland range consisting of five Boxers and a Bison will make up the exhibition display of Gilbraith Commercials Ltd. One is a BX 1000 model on a wheelbase of 3.3m (10ft 1 lin) complete with Yorkshire Engineering Gully Emptier equipment for Surrey County Council. The Bison is a 3BN50.24 NTF2 model fitted with Sheppard Meiller/Powell Duff ryn container loader equipment.

Another exhibit, the Twinskip Edbro Bucket Loader, made its debut at the RHA Tipper Conference at Harrogate. It is an adaptation of the standard Edbro BLB 2L Bucket Loader hydraulic skip-handling mechanism for trucks using two 9cum (12cuyd) buckets on a long wheelbase chassis. The show model is a Foden eightwheeler with a wheelbase of 6.5m (2Ift 4in).

A conventional BLB 2L Bucket Loader with a 7.5 cum (10cuyd) bucket will be displayed on a Leyland Clydesdale 16-ton chassis with a wheelbase of 3.97m (13ft).

Three vehicles from Laird (Anglesey) Ltd will be on display including a modified version of the standard Shark refuse collector. This model is similar to the previous design except that the operation is now completely hydraulic which replaces the mechanical operation of the rotating drum and the pneumatic opening of the rear door. The company hopes that the modification will reduce noise and effect, a saving in maintenance time and costs.

The smaller Shark is also on show which operates on the same principles but has a capacity of approximately twothirds that of the standard model. It can be mounted on a variety of chassis.

On the electric vehicle front, the Tri-Truk now marketed by Harbilt Electric Vehicles Ltd has a patented electro-hydraulic device at the rear which picks up the laden bin for transportation to the compaction or bulk collection point, elevates the bin and tips it to discharge the contents as required. The wheelbase of the Tr-Truck is 1.77m (5ft 10in) and the maximum height with the bin elevated is 3.74m (12ft 4in).

Also on show from Harbilt will be the Model 770 pedestrian-controlled chassis which can be supplied with either an aluminium side-loading end-tipping body of 1.9cum (2.5cuyd) capacity or with bin-type bodywork for holding either six or 12 lightweight polythene bins each of 910 cum (3.25cuft) capacity. The maximum speed of the 770 is 4.8km/h (3mph) and the weight of the chassis— excluding the battery—is 254kg (5cwt).

Six vehicles presented •by Shelvoke and Drewry Ltd will include several models from the Revopak range. The NY Series 18 is claimed by S and D to be the most popular model in the range with a wheelbase of 4.3m (14ft) and a gvw of 16.3 tonnes (16 tons). Alternative power 'units offered are the Leyland 401 and Ford 380 diesel engines while the technical specification also includes full air brakes, five-speed gearbox and power-assisted steering.

The show model is fitted with SD rack and pinion operated squeeze clamp bulk container loading gear. In this form a payload of 6.86 tonnes (6.75tons) is possible while a payload of 7.36 tonnes (7.25 tons) can be achieved in handloading form. continued overleaf
