Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE 30,000 platform staff of London Transport have been given 30 days' notice of the Board's intention to operate a closed shop.

This in effect means that all of the Board's employees will be required to join an appropri ate trade union. The Board is taking this action in terms of the Industrial Relations (Amendment) Act 1975, according to a Board spokesman.

The spokesman told CM "We are reverting to an old system where we operated a complete closed shop, and found it to be totally satisfactory?'

He went on to say that at the moment the matter was still at a personal level and that the Board did not know how many of its employees belonged -to a trade union, but he thought the numbers would be substantial.

An employee who fails to join a union where a closed shop agreement is in operation renders himself liable to dismissal, unless there is a postentry clause in operation.
